Thought it might be useful to some to mention this firm again. They sell ready meals and things online, deliver to the door and the big thing is that the food does not have to be stored in a freezer or fridge.

An older relative, whose judgement I trust, told me about them and uses them quite a bit, she found them very good and easy when she was convalescing at home after an op. Portion sizes are average, not huge.

I saw Wiltshire Farm Foods deliver a 'trial box' to a house up the Rise this morning ... they're not the usual WFF demographic .... probably mid to late 40s with an almost grown up daughter ... Mrs is a graphic designer ... not sure what Mr does. I'm wondering whether they're trying it out for themselves or maybe for elderly relatives ... (aren't I nosy :oops:

Jo Goode on Radio London said her local Waitrose (Marylebone) was a disaster zone, she strolled down to Whole Foods Market on Glasshouse Street by Piccadilly Circus, it was serene, she got everything she wanted plus treats. We are mostly not dependent on getting everything from supermarkets

I see that a lot of local farm shops and village pubs etc are starting to offer home delivery or contactless pickup for things like fruit, veg, milk & eggs. Also it seems a lot of eateries are offering take away meals. How resourceful of them. I suspect the farm shops will be overwhelmed with requests.

Our local (foodie) pub is doing exactly that.

I expect we shall get a takeaway evening meal from them on our wedding anniversary in early April (we had planned a short trip away but obviously that's gone by the wayside) unless all such places have been officially shut down by then. Time will tell I suppose.

Going back to panic-buying.... Mr S spotted someone selling a 4-pack of Andrex on Ebay for £16.00 plus p&p... :evil:

I am amazed at what is going on! This country came through a devastating War and coped brilliantly with shortages and rationing. The present generations are going mad! My neighbour, who is in her 80s, went to Co-op this morning, because she couldn't face going to Sainsbury's. She said that most shelves were empty (she went around 9.30, 8 am is too early for her.

I popped into the Indian grocers yesterday, with my disposable gloves and face mask on. It was pandemonium! At the door, I saw a young girls carrying two crates, yes crates, one each of Chick Peas and its country cousin Bengal gram.I looked at her and said, with a smile, are you hoarding then? She looked at me sheepishly and said, just a little, and walked on. I bought the last 5 kg bag of chapatti flour! This wholesale shop has a whole corner piled high of all sizes of chappati flour bags normally. It supplies restaurants!

Another neighbour, same age as me, in mid seventies, went to Sainsbury's for early hour for the elderly. Every age was there, jam packed, and she could not get any essentials.
Next time I order on line, if I can find a slot, I will order some stuff for her too, hoping that they wont feel I am hoarding and cancel half my orders!

Kavey has ordered my next weeks shopping from Wales, so it may be the week after that!

May the calm prevail once again.

One neighboured friend just called to say that burglars are still active, they are not worried about Corona! I guess they are safe with their masks and gloves!!! I hope they are not coming to steal my 6 loo rolls :lol:

One last shop for a while. I won't itaemize what was missing. About 90% of the shelves were empty. Everyone is exhorting people to go to local shops. I just stood in a queue in the Turkish shop for about 15 minutes, wondering if it was worth the risk. Probably not. Well it's done now. That will soon be out of stuff too, but at least I got some fresh fruit and veg (none in Sainsbury's). Don't want to get scurvey.
Will lock down alleviate this?
Still no joy re mother.

I did go on a foraging course once, but obviously I don't remember anything useful... other than don't try to eat cow parsley because it looks just like hemlock. Which is pretty damned useful, thinking about it..

i think the air is going to be cleaner in the foreseeable future than it has for many a year!
if you wash things well they should be fine - unless you're picking them from a busy roadside.

I think it's reaching the point where some form of policed (army in supermarkets perhaps?) rationing will have to be introduced. It seems to be impossible to stop people from panic-buying otherwise. It's a waste of resources that could be employed elsewhere but you can't expect the poor check-out staff to challenge people and prevent them from breaking the rules. I doubt there are sufficient in-store security people to call on.

The other side of this is that I have heard of a difficulty when people are shopping for elderly neighbours and for instance buying one more bottle of milk than allowed and having to put one back. With more and more streest rallying round and offering to help neighbours, this is understandable but sad. Of course, good neighbours can share out what milk there is but short of official rationing there's not much way of determining if the customer is genuine or not.

We have a scheme as per EM in our village (though as it has only just started it remains to be seen how it will work in practice). Local pub (currently offering takeaway meals) may double up as a 'pop up' shop (we have no village shop) for essentials but it is very much a work in progress locally.

The other thing is that it is all very well encouraging people in the various vulnerable groups to shop on line but even if they're able to do it there don't appear to be many available delivery slots. I worry that closing the schools will worsen the situation (though I understand the rationale behind it).

It's a logistical nightmare isn't it?

Sainsbury's flashed up with a thing saying they are currently trying to work out how to let the elderly and vulnerable have priority. So... the original offer was not backed by any clue about how to go about this!

I notice there are no click and collect options either.

I wonder what will happen if London goes into lock down. I guess we will still be allowed out to shop.

Meanwhile some of the price hikes on Amazon are criminal, Amazon fresh and grocery has not uped prices. Not sure how easy it is to get stuff delivered by them.

For Londoners, Natoora are setting up home delivery again, but not sure if they will cover those of us that are out in zone styx.

This has to all settle at some point, yes?! :shock:

i wouldn't worry too much, you will survive, a large part of the country cope without having ocado, deliveroo, waitrose or any of those sort of deliveries.
i think i could access sainsbugs and tesco but i think we are out of area for any others (never had a takeaway delivery either) - unless the village shops start doing deliveries.
i've never had a home delivery for normal shopping - it's probably too late to sign up now!

They should certainly prioritise who gets home deliveries.

Relative in Norfolk says she can't see any panic and Waitrose and local produce shops are well stocked. Wish I could say the same here.

i realise that but i'm not the only one down here with that level of service - cornwall has a very elderly population compared to many other places. there are many here in her position. our village was quick to start a group to help such people.
i realise you are very worried and feel helpless being such a distance away from your mother, it's only natural, but you are doing what you can, i doubt you can do more.

"WRVS" of course, apols, I think it began as WVS and then was given an R. My little Grandma was busy with it as well. Then I think SS or council funding took it over at some stage and then it got privatised, the sort of thing which is slipped in sneakily, who is going to complain but a bunch or coffin-dodgers. Shocking.
